Bharata Natyam
July 31 at 7:30pm, Charles Norman theatre, Tulsa

"Bharata Natyam is one of the most important of the eight Indian classical
dance styles with a history dating back to around 4000 BC. It draws its beauty
from the preciseness of the movement, from its symmetry and from the expression
of emotions conveyed through the skills of the dancers. Originally, Bharata
Natyam was performed by Devadasies, "handmaidens of God" who performed the
dance in the temples as part of a daily worship ritual.

Vinita Musepeta, Risha Musapeta and Shruti Ravindran, students of Shanthi
Ramesh, are among the performers in this SummerStage production. The dancers
wear pajama-like pants and jackets of Kanchipuram and Banaras silk along with
gemstones and other ornamentation on their necks, ears, hands and head. Jasmine
garlands decorate their hair and small bells are worn on their feet. THe
costumes are authentic, imported from India.

THe music of Bharata Natyam is based on Carnatic classical music. The
instruments used are veena, flute, mridangam and violin. There will also be two
singers.

Presenter Hari Musapeta says of the program, "This is a rare opportunity for
Americans to experience the rich heritage of a different and ancient culture."

Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for students.
