Well, this hardly constitutes a full recap but I will say that it was
an excellent presentation with beautiful photos and very good
information.

One of the things that stood out in my mind was the idea that Viking
dragon ships may have often been boldly and brightly painted. I tend
to think of them as brown due to the natural wood color and many
people apparently picture them as black due to the pitch used in
modern times to preserve them for display. However, they have
recently found and analyzed paint remnants from some and determined
that they were variously painted with black, red, yellow, bright blue,
and perhaps other colors. For example, there was a beautiful ship
showing one strake black, the next red, the next black again, then
yellow, then black down to the water line. Also, I believe quite a
few of us were stunned to learn that ships might be painted bright
blue using lapis lazuli for the color base!

In general, it is interesting to think of what we picture in our minds
of ancient times based on what we see today rather than how they
really were, such as imagining Plato surrounded by statues in
beautiful white marble whereas the evidence now tells us that ancient
Greek statues (and, indeed, even their buildings) were brightly
painted.
