Ok, we can try this again :)

In the Middle Ages, things were measured differently, using different scales.
Some of those scales were similar to what we use today, but people in
different
areas didn't agree on the details.  Really precise measurements are more a
modern thing anyway.

What that means though is that a merchant, or whoever was dealing with a
merchant
needed to know what sorts of differences were likely to pop up to keep from 
getting robbed.  Just because one merchant calls this distance such a
thing, doesn't
mean that another one will.
