Very good question.
My Laurel asked this question of her apprentices once, as an assignment.  If I were at home I'd cheat and re-read what I wrote then.
And, you know, I wonder at times if I truely want to be a Peer.  There is so much hassle involved.  Meetings, dealing politely with people you'd like to kick in the tush, backbiting, politics (note that I list this seperately from backbiting), and all the unpleasent things that we hear about.  
But I also think that Peers are, or should be our greatest resource as a Society.  They are our default Elders of the Tribe.  They may not have all the answers, but they know the process and how best to guide those who are on a similar quest.  (sorry, getting tired, starting to do a little visionquesting myself...*ack*  Gnat!  *swat*)
The mantle of a Peer is knowledge, whether it be knowledge of service, arts and science or martial.  
Of course I would like to be a Peer!  I view it as more of a job than an accolade, but I would love to be recognized as being at that level in our Society.
Will it ever happen?  eh, probably not.  Will I be disappointed if I never become one?  Nope.   To echo Roberts comments, it is the striving that makes it worthwhile.
