If you can find a pair, some army surplus places carry East German Army 
officers' boots.  They're not period, but are pretty neutral - i.e., they 
aren't glaringly modern, and the eye tends to simply recognize them as 
boots and ignore them.  They are also supposed to wear like iron.  They 
come in black and dark brown, and look a bit like English riding boots, but 
are much less expensive - about $40-$50 last time I checked.
