Novels or textbooks?
There are a number of basic histories of Scotland out there:
Just a few references (making no firm judgements that there
aren't better ones out there)
	The Encyclopedia Britannica
Maclean, Fitzroy, A concise history of Scotland. London:
Thames and Hudson, 1981.
Mitchison, Rosalind. A history of Scotland. London: Methuen
1970.
Terry, Charles Sanford. A history of Scotland from the
Roman evacuation to the disruption, 1843. Cambridge [Eng.]:
The University Press, 1920.
More specifically:
	Barrow, G. W. S. Kingship and unity Scotland 1000-1306.
Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 1989.
Smyth, Alfred P. Warlords and holy men Scotland, AD
80-1000. London, Baltimore: E. Arnold 1984.
And, a novel:
Tranter, Nigel G. Macbeth the king. London: Hodder and
Stoughton 1978.
Take a look for these, or things like these, and also look
at the materials listed in their bibliographies for further
places to look. You'll get a good start.
