Something to remember about making weapons.  

"Weight" is subjective.  A heavy but well balanced sword will feel
lighter than it really is because it works with your musculature.  A
heavy, poorly balanced sword is going to feel like lead pipe any way you
swing it.  Light rattan can be weighted up easily (leather or tape). 
Heavy rattan can only be reduced in weight by shaving.
