First, the helpful (maybe) part: I have found no word corresponding to 'assassin' in modern or early Gaelic but I am no expert. However, in the 16th century when Ireland was fighting for its existence and culture, the term 'gallowglass' was used.
Simply put, it was a sort of enforcer or minion of rebellious leaders. 'Kern' was a related word with roughly a similar meaning, though there were differences. Perhaps
some more knowledgeable in this area could clarify?
Now, the killjoy part. I do not support the Assassins' Guild. With no disrespect to its founders or practioners, who I believe sincerely intended only the purest fun and schtick by this sub-game of our game, said sub-game has a great tendency to attract (a
minority) of players who use it to hurt others and practice cruelty and dishonor in their play. I stress that they are a minority, but well capable of dealing misery and destruction that will hurt many. Recently I heard of an incident involving a player
Assassin who misbehaved atrociously (in my opinion) to gain a high-rank "kill". It can be very tempting to do this and say "it's only a game", but does that excuse unethical behaviour in its play? If the "kill" is a permanent destruction of the targeted
persona (as has been my understanding, please correct if I am wrong), there is a very great danger of using this in a negative way against anyone. I'm sure I don't have to spell it out.
Please be cautious. Killjoy mode off now.
