No mistake truly on your Lordship's part.
I think that lately the trend has been for the body of Heralds to prefer or
insist upon Badges without a field in that they are more period.
Traditionally, a badge was a chief symbol from the Coat of Arms, from the
crest or specifically chosen and/or designated as a particular charge to
represent a person outside of their main heraldry. If any color was used
for a background it was either the main color of their arms (the livery
colors) or whatever suited their fancy.... Kieran
