GULF WARS ANNOUNCEMENT

Calling all Spinners, Weavers, and Textile Folks!

TACIG (Textile Arts Construction Interest Group) and the Early Period Life
encampment are sponsoring a Sheep-to-Shawl project all day Thursday, March
13 in the Early Period Life area at the war. There will be a fleece, and
there will be one or more looms, but we will need volunteers to help card or
comb, spin, and weave in shifts in order to complete the project(s) in a
single day!

A traditional sheep-to-shawl is a competition between groups of people for
speed and quality. Typically, teams of 5 or 6 people bring a loom already
warped and hand cards and spinning wheels, and each team starts with a pile
of washed fleece. Then the wool is carded, spun, and woven all in a few
hours. The teams complete a certain amount of yardage, and points are
awarded for time and the appearance of the final product.

This years Sheep-to-Shawl will be a participation demonstration, where we
will complete the project in one day, but anyone who wishes can participate
(all skill levels are welcome!). We will need something like 6 spinners to
provide yarn for one weaver, and we may have more than one loom, SO, the
more the merrier!!! There will be a signup sheet posted all week in the
TACIG booth on Artisan's Row so that folks can sign up to spin and/or weave
(or just card!) for 1-2 hour shifts as their schedules allow. Bring a
friend! Bring a spindle or wheel! Bring hand cards or combs! Or just
bring your hands! Non-textile folks can hang out and visit and watch, or
very likely they'll be able to find some metal to bang on!

For questions please contact Marina, (615) 883-5581 or
laura.artates at nashville.gov (No calls after 10 p.m. central time, please.)

P.S. This project is a teaser! Next year TACIG is planning to sponsor a
"Wool-to-Whatever" contest - more details to follow!
