You are such a wuss - being nice...

(for those of you who haven't seen one of these - this is going to be one of
those rants Diamraid's known for. Small children and people with heart
conditions may want to leave the room)

The topic of classes is a person issue for me, so I'm going to say this from
a slightly different direction. Yes these things are a pain for Falan to
schedule; this is because all too frequently the people who teach these
classes are reluctant to make the commitment needed to teach -when the know
that no one's going to show up-.

You all probably don't know this, but it's a pain in the ass to prepare to
teach a class - even for me. It's work, but we do it because this is
_supposed_ to be an educational organization.

Now I realize that almost everyone in this group has a life outside the SCA,
I certainly know -I- do. But when only a couple of people can be bothered
to show up out of a baronial population of at LEAST 150 people, paid and
unpaid -- this tells ME that you really don't want my classes.

I know Mistress Catherine put a good face on the fact that only Istvan and
Serena showed up to her fabric thing a few weeks ago (well, ok, I showed up
too - mostly because I figured that no one would be there and she'd have to
be there all by herself - something I know *I* hate). But she's a peer, she
HAS to be nice about it. I don't.

But when we stop having anyone around here willing to teach anything, I'm
not really going to be patient if I hear whining about it.

(BTW, Istvan and Serena - thank you. You two have at least made an effort
to get involved with the majority of the classes that have been held in the
past year)

While I'm at it -- the Saga -- in case you have missed the Chronicler's
reports for the past few months, subscriptions are down this year - way
down. What's up with that?

You know, if Northkeep is REALLY the "best Barony in the Known Worlde" or
whatever it is that you all have been bragging about for the past however
many years, why do we have these issues? Low subscriptions, no one showing
up at classes, and so on. Or are we really just the "best darned small
group of people keeping a batch of bragging parasites afloat so those".

You tell me -- better yet, you -show- me.

Recently I was talking to someone and trying teo explain that I don't tell
people how to play SCA. Right now I'm making an exception to that. You
people are supposed to be part of a Community. Communities work together,
look beyond their own petty interests and make an effort to help each other,
and help the Group. Some of you know that already and live it, and
admittedly, some of you are just tired of being "one of the few, the proud".
But you know what, the "core group" has never really exceeded 10-20 people
at any give time -- while population's skyrocketed.

If you can't be bothered to get involved in what's going on around you, you
probably shouldn't be upset when no one's really interested in getting
involved with you.
