Ideally, tallow - in a pinch, you can melt beeswax and vaseline together,
but I haven't found the 'right' recipe yet.  Oils like Neatsfoot may make
them a bit too stretchy.

You might consider just getting some clear shoe polish and hitting them with
that for a while.
