One excellent example of blocking software is AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/  which offers a free version for personal  use.  Pop-up Stopper also has a free version (http://www.panicware.com/popupstoppercompare.html for personal use.  The "Basic" version of Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp also stops pop-ups and is free.  It is a low-end firewall, so you will be protected from more than pop-ups.
