I wouldn't go that far. Even if your "gambeson" is a simple shirt, a
layer of fabric between your soft skin and your not so soft armor is a
prudent decision, and can save you scrapes and pinches.
Ask Wolf about the wisdom of fighting in shorts :)

'Course there's the other thing to think about...You don't _have_ to
wear a gambeson. Armor can be constructed in such a way as to make it
uneeded. A coat of brigandine, good scale, or heavy leather like I wear
works fine without the extra padding (other than what my eating habit
has added that is).
