Piffle, that's how you soften Saxon-hide.  The authentically correct, period
fashion for Linen is to take the linen, make it into a different outfit,
then put it on a servant and make them wear it for a year or so.  Then it
will be nice and softened, so that when you cut it apart you can remake it
into your britches and they'll be all comfy (and actually, I'm serious about
the latter).
