The web sites Reghnailt recommended are good ones to learn terms from
and find a variety of sources of info. As Diarmaid noted earlier, links
to Modar's page exist on our own Baronial Heraldry page as does a link
to the main SCA Heraldry site.

On Chris' questions, two items:
1) You can be "Chris the Wanderer" (and register it) as long as there is
not another "Chris the Wanderer". "Zubeydah the Wanderer" does not give
Zubeydah total control of the descriptive byname "Wanderer"; it only
gives her copyright (sort of) to the entire name "Zubeydah the
Wanderer". It also does not prevent someone else from taking "Zubeydah"
and being "Zubeyday the Baker" or somesuch. She gets registration of
the whole, not the parts.

2) In addition to the web sites mentioned here and previously, there are
several really good books that are exactly the dictionary you are
looking for. J.P. Brook-Little's "An Heraldic Alphabet" or Joeseph
Foster's "The Dictionary of Heraldry..." are excellent sources.
