Ok, I'm about to violate several of my own rules here:

I'm cross-posting this from the Medieval Leather and the Medieval shoemaking
groups on Yahoo ("Look Ma, no ads")
===================
Ok, I've gotten a scrap of the leather from Muir & McDonald. It was thinner
than I'd hoped (to test for soles - they sent me a 9-10 oz sample when I
need a 12+) but it does seem to be very good leather in general - definately
worth looking into further.

If anyone wants to try them the number is 1-800-547-1299. They have no web
presence. Po Box 136/505 SW Levins/Dallas, Oregon 97338

The prices are by the square foot, and they only sell sides apparently. and
are about 5.50 per square foot +/- 10-20 cents per for the two best grades
of "knife sheath and holder leather"; "carving tooling and strap leather"
and "saddle leather (skirting)". There isn't a whole lot of price
difference between the thinnest and cheapest of those two grades at 5.34 for
6-7 oz, and the thickest and most expensive at 5.69 for 12 oz and up. The
third grade seems pretty constant at 4.20 a square foot for all weights of
leather.

For orders of less than 10 sides, you should add 1$ per square foot
Shipping prices aren't listed.

A side is on average 20-21 square feet so that's about a $117 for the
heaviest weight (or rather, 16-26 square feet per side, so a max price range
of about $91 to #153.

And no, I get nothing for this free advertizing. I just like the thought of
encouraging traditional leather making in the US.

Marc
