Also, everything is arranged by similarity. If two items are listed under the same armory description, they are the same object to a herald. What this means is that two devices that are identical except they each have a different charge that is listed under the same armory description, then they conflict. For example:

Argent, a dog's head erased gules

is identical, to a herald, to

Argent, a wolf's head erased gules.

This is really confusing. I've been studying heraldry since the late 80s and I am just getting the hang of conflict checking.

Chris, try thinking of heraldry jargon as a programming language. If you
insert X,Y,Z into a device, it will look like THIS (at least that's the
theory). What this does mean though that if you don't look through the
software using THEIR idea of what the main thing is, you probably aren't
going to find anything. Add to that the fact that the Ordinary software
(while a vast improvement over looking through paper records) is less than
ideal.

Any meaning or symbolism is frequently up to the person bearing the arms.
Many of the terms you mentioned are tinctures (which is Heraldspeak for
"colors"). "Azure" means "blue"; Argetn is Silver; Vert is Green and so
on.

If you can't wait for Masamune's class, you might looking at some of Modars
heraldic pages, available through the links and the heraldry pages of the
Northkeep web site.
