It's true:  from the research I've read, they say that
linen generally bleaches well, but doesn't take dye as
well, which is why you generally saw undergarments in
period being fine white linen.

Linen requires different dyeing procedures and
mordants, and produces different colors than wool or
cotton would, dyed with the same dyes, and dyed linen
is likely to fade, at least with natural dyes.

With modern synthetic dyes--I dunno.  You might look
for a dye that specifies on the label that it's good
for linen.
