Last time I checked merchants were not operating at your events because
of the tax collecting regulations.
Did they mention the requirement of an attempt at period clothing? (It
is the only thing the Corpora actually requires of attending
participant.)

Sciences Medieval Event and Craft Fair.

The event will feature medieval clothing, armor and food all made by

and regional artisans.

The doors will open at 8 a.m. on both days. The public is invited to
attend.

            Getting medieval

            A group of modern people gather regularly, dressed in
medieval
clothing, to travel back in time.

            Owen-Ap-Aedden (a Welsh name) is otherwise known as Eric
Jackson. His Middle Ages persona is a northern region night marshal. A
night
marshal helped keep things together, "like a captain or manager of a
football team - kind of an apprentice for becoming a knight," he said.

            Jackson and the others are members of the Society for
Creative
Anachronism, a worldwide organization of people who are enthusiastic
about
the Middle Ages.

            New society members must first develop their own Middle Ages
identity. The idea is to develop a character who could have existed
during
the times. Members make or acquire clothing and other accouterments
suitable
for the time and their character - a serf would not, for example, carry
a
sword.

            Sabin Slater (Myria Slater) said "the name 'Slater' is
documented to the Middle Ages. I've always been fascinated with Henry
VIII
and Queen Elizabeth II," she said.

            She explained her fascination with Henry VIII: "his charisma
and
he was a very boisterous man who knew what he wanted; his history and
exploits."

            She is the club's reeve, or treasurer. In the Middle Ages,
she
would "probably be overseeing the family business and family interests."

            Magdalena Da Cadamosto (Christina Biles) has chosen to be a
seneschal - though, in the Middle Ages, seneschals were male.

            A seneschal was a person who "organized the castle, made
sure
everybody did their job and made sure there were plenty of supplies in
case
of siege," she said.

            Northern Reeve Gilyan Clonmacnoise (April Gillilan) would
"have
overseen all the local groups, their treasurers and made certain
everything
balanced."

            Included in the job description would be "a lady who
oversees
her lord's household, makes sure things run smoothly and sees her lord
off
to the Crusades."

            The Honorable Lord Marke Von Mainz said he has "a grant
level
award for Arts and Sciences."

            He explained there are three such awards. The first is Award
of
Arms.

            "With that you get to put 'lord or lady' before your name."

            The second award is the Grant of Arms. With that award "you
get
to put 'honorable' before lord or lady."

            With the Patent of Arms, one can be a knight or lady, master
or
mistress.

            Von Mainz, whose modern name is Dave Mann, added "a lot of
ladies, if the lord was away, were charged with the castle. In many
cases
they actually bore arms" to defend it.

            Welshman Lloywelyn Bryddid brought his harp to the
gathering. In
the Middle Ages, "there were professional musicians who were hired by
the
noble families, but boys and girls were expected to learn. Every
Welshman or
woman was expected to learn how to play the harp."

            Bryddid (Mark Williams) quoted a Welsh adage, "three things
are
needed to be a gentleman: a cloak, a chess board and a harp that is in
 tune."
