If I remember correctly, the gate is called the "Troll" because of a pun and 
an old nursery tale called "The Billy Goats Gruff".  Effectively it is about 
a troll that lives under a bridge and makes those that cross pay to make it 
safely over.  Cross that tale with the modern "Toll Gate" and you end up 
with the "Troll".
