[Northkeep] An alternative: Valor Tourney

I know we have a number of folks going to Gothic and there's an
in-kingdom event closer, but for those who enjoy something different I'd
heartily suggest you consider the following event.  The folks in Vatavia
are always welcoming and for fighters it's pure fun..

September 2-5, 2005.
First Presbyterian Church Camp
9601 W. 73rd Street North, Wichita, Kansas (Same site as Gathering of
the Clans II)

Site Opens: 5:00 pm, Friday the 2nd
Site Closes: Noon, Monday the 5th


Featuring
The 26th Valor Tournament * 9-Foot Spear Tourney * Boar Hunt * Archery *
Equestrian * Bardic Competition

Fighting

Saturday, Sept. 3rd.

    * 9:30 am - Armor and weapon inspections.
    * 10:30 am - Hanashi 9' spear tournament.

The Boar Hunt - The animals will consist of various species - boar (two
sword), stag (9' spear), and bear (weapon and shield).  The hunting
parties will consist of one hunter (may use any weapon system including
combat archery), and two mastiffs (hunting dogs that may only bark or
point at the game, and only allowed a single sword).  A fully armored
marshal shall accompany each party only as a non-biased observer.
   After the boar hunt, there will be a warlord's tourney to finish out
the day of armored fighting; unless some want to do pick-ups.
   After court is over and depending on who is up to it, there will be a
"Sumo Tourney."

Sunday, Sept. 4th

    * 11:00 - Valor Tournament

This tournament will be hand-and-a-half sword only.  No great swords are
allowed.

Arts and Sciences
Japanese garb contest with prizes for Most Period; Prettiest; Best
Fighter; Most Period Archer; Most Period Equestrian; and Best Child.
Also Japanese household item.

Feast
Feast for this year's Valor has been cancelled. A Vatavian Tavern will
be run throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday, Sept. 3rd

    * 9:00 am- Tack Check (required)
    * 10:30 am - Processional/Emprise
      Quadrille presented by Riders of the Winds,
      Shire of Spinning Winds
    * 11:30 am - Dakyu Demo
      Break/Free ride time
    * 4:00 pm - Gaming for Beginning/Intermediate Riders

Sunday, Sept. 4th

    * 9:00 am - Tack check (required)
    * 10:00 am - Gaming for Advanced Riders
    * 12:00 pm - Open gaming, ride time
    * 3:00 pm - Jousting, mounted combat gaming

Anyone wishing to authorize for equestrian needs to e-mail Iolair at
helget at wamego.net  prior to the event.

Merchants
Merchants are welcome and encouraged, and there is no Merchanting fee.
Regular Site fees are still required.
Merchants are encouraged to e-mail Lady Lenna with any special requests
if they have any special requests such as electricity or their tent size
to make sure there is enough room for everyone.

Site Details
Site Fees: $12.00 for adults, $6.00 for ages 13-17, children 12 and
under get in free. There is an additional $3.00 surcharge for adult
non-members. The family cap is $30 (not including non-member surcharge).
Make checks payable to SCA Inc., Barony of Vatavia.

The site includes a full hall, plenty of camping space, a nature trail,
a swimming pool, showers, indoor restrooms, and porta-a-johns. Site is
wet, but alcohol is requested to be in period containers.

Bunks are available to rent.  Please contact Lady Lenna to reserve a
bunk.  Costs are $3 per night per bunk ($9 for the entire weekend).  All
reservations must be paid in advance.  Confirmations will be sent when
we receive your payment.  Save some gas and carpool with your favorite
fighters!

Directions
Take your best route to I-135 in Wichita, KS. Follow I-135 to the north
edge of Wichita, to K-96 West. Continue on K-96 to Ridge Road. Take
Ridge Road north to 73rd St. North. Turn left on 73rd St, and continue
for several miles. The road curves and ends right at the site. Look for
SCA signs and the First Presbyterian Church Camp.
