If anyone's interested, I have the 15th century coat pattern (the one I used 
for the first round of Alton's company's coats) in three sizes.  They are 
really easy to make, in either "economical" or expensive fabric, for field 
or court wear.

And as someone mentioned, yes, an arming coat with a smallish badge on the 
chest was indeed common for 15th c. military units.
