Saddle soap *is* best, yes. If you have it. If you don't, you can try a
little "Murphy's oil soap". Even so, most of what these do is add oils back
to the leather. You're going to do that anyway, so as long as you use it
sparingly, you can use almost any sort of soap if you have to, as long as
you re-oil *before the leather dries*.
