That which does not destroy us, strengthens us.  
 
I'm always amazed when I hear a rumor about me because it means someone has wasted thought and effort to spread a rumor, when Lord knows I provide enough factual weirdness to make people look at me sideways.  
 
Mom used to say a nasty rumor was a compliment in a messy wrapping: at the root of it, someone is envious of you.
