I do agree with this idea for the perimeter poles with the exception of the uprights which will need to be 2x4s put together to form 4x4s

As some one who has had period pavillions for many many years, you are money ahead by just buying the off the shelf 2x2 s from and home improvement store. They are cheap and plentiful, easily replaced, and decent wood.
DO NOT take time and effort to split 2x4s
