To buy your own sheet metal try Borg.  I'm in possession of a 4'x4' 
piece of, I think, 14 ga sheet steel which has a helm skirt cut out of it. 

 

Which brings up the question...a few years ago I gave the 12 ga spun 
dome and skirt pieces to the Marshallate.  Did they ever get assembled 
for a baronial loaner helm?

It looks like I will be making my next helm. does anyone know a good place to get the sheet metal and bar stock. I'm used to welding regular steel is stainless or hardened steel much harder to deal with??
