The Castellan site closes at 9:00 am on Sunday morning, but don't plan on heading home immediately! Because a collection of Renaissance drawings is on exhibit at the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa:

"From Michelangelo to Annibale Carracci: A Century of Italian Drawings from the Prado" is a fantastic collection of works by fifty artists, daing from 1520 to 1620. All the major Italian schools are represented, and a few Flemish artists as well. Names you may recognize include Giovanni Balducci, Passignano, Federico Zuccaro, Paolo Veronese, Jacopo Tintoretto, and Georgio Vasari. The centerpiece is three drawings by Michelangelo, two of which are anatomical studies for figures in the Sistine Chapel.

All the works are concept sketches, or preliminary drawings for larger paintings. They are all on paper, some in chalk, some in ink, some on large sheets trimmed to scale for the final work, and some on odd scraps of paper. One is even on the reverse side of a page from an account ledger. The subjects include classical and allegorical themes, historical and Biblical scenes, votive pictures, and ornamental designs.

The Philbrook Museum, built in the style of a grand, Italian villa, is the former home of oil magnate Waite Phillips. The collections include everything from African art to Native American basketry, antique coins to Rodin sculptures, but the heart of the collection is its Renaissance paintings from the 1400s thorugh the 1600s. The museum also has Elizabethan-era canvaswork chairs, carved baroque chests, a 16th century portable desk with magnifcent enamelled panels on the drawer fronts, and terra-cotta panels from the workshop of della Robbia.

Master Diarmaid has some photos of the museum and some of its holdings on his Flickr account at: www.flicker.com/photos/imarcc

The museum is open on Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. General admission is $7.50; $5.50 for seniors, students, and groups of 10 or more. Call ahead for group arrangements at (918) 749-7941 or (800) 324-7941.

No cameras are allowed in the special exhibit. Non-flash photography is permitted in the rest of the museum and on the grounds.

Check out the museum website at www.philbrook.org for more information and directions.

In servicio,

Talana
