I really can't speak for anyone else, and that's really why I didn't respond to your question.  In my case, what makes  "Da North" different is very subjective, and could easily turn into a case of "star bellied Sneetches".  So really, what makes it different for me it that it's where I'm from.  South and Central Ansteorra, Calontir, Outlands*, Glenn Abhenn, etc -as nice as they are- aren't where i'm from.  They do things differently, eat strange foods, worship strange gods, have different priorities, a different cultural identity, and so on.

*ok, technically, I was born in what the SCA considers the Outlands, but that was before the SCA even existed, so I don't think it counts.
