If you really wanted to be concerned, what about places like Greenland, who we know did NOT eat a lot of fish, and didn't have a lot of extra meat, but did produce large amounts of dairy, consume during Lent?
 
And yes, Greenland, as well as the majority of the Scandinavian countries were good Christians during the post-1000 middle ages.  Why Greenland even burned itself a witch in 1409 during the last documented visit by people to there.
