[Northkeep] Speaking of Memories.....

My first event was a revel and I was very young. All I saw was a bunch of strange dressed people who talked funny and made me wear an odd dress. But that was 21 years ago.

However, more recently, when I returned to the SCA after a 10 year stent away and a move to Oregon, it was at Castellan in 2008. I had a few friends I could remember from before and wanted to find. Most of them I did: Thorvald, Kevin and Keigan, Facon, Elizabeth, Ulf and a few others were among those friends I remembered. I was so excited that I was reunited with some old friends, yet saddened that I couldn't find some others. Setting up for feast, I saw a handsome man and beautiful woman looking for a table and offered for them to share with me. This was my first meeting with Morgan and Montega. I also found new friends in what had only been acquaintances before: Angus and Ciana.

Was there one thing at the event that stood out (besides the hurricane Sunday morning)? No...there were lots. Hugs and OMGs and even a few happy tears. This one little event not only gave me the chance to see a few old friends, but the opportunity to embrace a whole new family.

To all of these friends and all the others I have made in the last few years: I love you dearly.

Dervilia

Not at my first event but my first Queen's Champion, for Queen Jocelyn, in Bryn Gwlad:  There was a special prize offered for "panache", and some fighters were showing it through courtly bows and flourishes, some with schtick.  One gentleman, in a rapier-and-weapon-of-choice round, used a hand puppet on his off hand.  The puppet taunted the opponent, who eventually fell for the bait and began trying to take out the puppet instead of the swordsman.

But my favorite bout that day involved a gentleman named Alastair, a Welshman.  He was also a real a Welshman, who spoke with a beautiful accent and played a mean set of bagpipes.  Alastair was a good bit older than most of the contestants, but he gave as good as he got despite his gray beard.  When the marshals called "Lay on!"  he let out with a battle scream that totally rattled his opponent, then chased the guy around the list field a couple of times before settling down to business.

In servicio,

Talana
