I'd have to disagree.  Most of the animal and starch based glues work very well.  They tend to have really long drying and curing times, which can be a problem if one is impatient.  And of course they aren't always waterproof.  Modern yellow Carpenters glues are great, but if I'm putting together furniture, I'll take a hide glue any day.

Now if I were going to glue a strip of cloth to something in order to use it like tape, I'd probably go for a starch based paste, since it takes less time to dry.  And books pasted together can last easily over a thousand years, or as long as the paper/parchment lasts.
