Violet Le Duc ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eug%C3%A8ne_Viollet-le-Duc 
) was an architect, builder, researcher, etc. for Emperor Napoleon the 
3rd. through the mid-1800's   The Emperor, among other castle owners in 
France, commissioned him to restore period buildings etc.   Prior to 
beginning a restoration he would often find the oldest living people in 
the area an interview them and then put together sketches bases on those 
peoples childhood memories.  From these sketches and any other surviving 
drawings, paintings, tapestries, etc. he would develop  plan and proceed 
to rebuild.  Perhaps one of his most noted works is Carcassonne in 
southern France which is generally considered the finest example of a 
walled medieval city still in existence.  Other examples include Notre 
Dame in Paris, and Mont St. Michael in Brittany.    He published on a 
number of topics.
