At the Military Through the Ages event in Jamestown, VA, there is a very good Viking-era re-enactment group that attends regularly.  Their cook told me the traditional way to make such pots water tight is to boil milk in them until the caesin fills the gaps and seals them.  I do not know how much milk she has to go through to achieve this.
