In Honor of Shoe Class This Evening--and our Illustrious Instructor
Monday, December 9
Cobbler's Monday--A Holiday, known also as St. Monday, observed by
journeymen, shoemakers, and other "inferior mechanics", and well-to-do
merchants. Supposed origin: "While Oliver Cromwell's army was encamped at
Perth, one of his zealous partisans named Monday died and Cromwell offerred
a reward for the best lines to his death. A shoemaker of Perth brought one
which so pleased Cromwell that he not only gave the reward, but made a
decree that shoemakers be allowed to make Monday a standing Holiday."
