TENT - Sewing question

Greets,

I've been doing some test stitching, and have come to the conclusion that my old beat up yamaha(Yes they make sewing machines too) isn't up to the job.

Any one have any advice on what brand name sewing machine works best with 10 once cotton canvas?

Any brand names I should avoid?

What style needle should I use, and how frequently should I change them?
