I have a chair design that comes apart and looks reasonably period;
it's loosely based on a chair I bought years ago at Pennsic. But I
have no evidence that it is a period design.

One  simple solution is to use rugs instead of chairs. They are
considerably more portable, and small rugs that look period are
readily available.
