"Non-fighting spring event" is from holding the rest of the "other"
baronial competitions and fighting wasn't to be pushed (ie, like
A Day at the Forum - the Baronial Competitions:

Ravenskald, Haft Master, Brewmiester/Vintner, Chevalier and Bowman

are being put into the spotlight and the Gladiator pit is to give the 
armored combatants something to do if they are not interested in the other 
competitions that are being promoted.
NOW, the "2nd" event - actually 3rd (Defender, Spring Event and our extra 
event) can promote all or none of the fighting activities.
Please try to remember that their are usually TWO Spring Events because
it is cooler in Feb. than it is in August...
