May 2001 Populace Gathering of the Barony of Ravens Fort

Meeting was held at the Huntsville Fire Station in Bay 1 on 05/03/01
There were approx. 24 members of populace present.
7:38    Call to Order

Their Excellencies welcomed all to the meeting and congratulated Ld Marius
on an excellent event.

HL Niklas announced that he would be giving short lessons on various
aspects of the SCA. At this meeting he went over the basic Kingdom
recognized awards. For a hand out please contact him, or go to
www.ansteorra.org and download them there.

HL Kezia gave the Fighter Practice Committee's report. They have decided
that the official Baronial fighter practice should be at the Gazebo, in
Huntsville, every Sunday of the month. At Daylight Savings Time the time
will change. In winter it will be at 2 pm and in summer it will be at 4
pm.  Quarterly the Barony will be putting on a mini-tourney in various
locations across our zip code territory to boost membership. The committee
encourages private fighter practices for specialized training. A vote will
be held at this month's Business meeting to approve the committee's decision.

Terri Bussa spoke about the up-coming Montgomery School Fair on May 18th. A
final schedule of activites has been decided on. Please keep an eye on the
Raven's Fort list for the schedule and contact Mrs. Bussa for more
information. This event is a "more the merrier" event, so please take time
to come and show you're a&s, bardic and fighting skills!

This month's Gathering was a Show and Tell day. Various members brought up
pieces of a&s work to show and discuss with the populace. Ldy Jacinth,
Trish Catalina, HE Gwynn, HE Chrystal & Ldy Ayla, Sir Kief, Ld Arturus, Ld
jean-michel, and HL Kezia all showed their wonderful projects and
enlightened the populace on various skills and historical documentation.

Their Excellencies David st David and Chrystal Ariana MacRruari announced
to the Populace that they will be stepping down from their offices this
summer. A non-verbal nomination process will be put into effect. Further
and finalized information will be provided at this month's Business
meeting. Their Excellencies wish to impress upon the populace the
importance of this decision. It is up to the populace to nominate the next
Baron and Baroness but the Crown will make the final decision. Attend the
next Business meeting to participate in this important and historic process.

Please don't miss next month's populace gathering. It is a wonderful
opportunity to enjoy yourself!





May 2001 Business meeting of the Barony of Ravens Fort

Meeting was held at the Citizen's Bank in New Waverly on 05/17/01
There were 36 members of populace present.
7:20 Call to Order
        A welcome from the Baron and Baroness and the Seneschal was
extended to all present.
Mistress Clarissa di Firenze was in attendance as the liaison for TRH and
to explain the up and coming Baronial Poling process.
Their Excellencies advised everyone to remember the importance of the
business at hand and save all questions for the end.

Mistress Clarissa began by discussing her qualifications for overseeing
this process and by extending the wishes of the Crown for the barony to
choose wisely. She also described who qualifies to be the next Baron and
Baroness (B&B). Those who qualify must exhibit the following traits: a
member of the SCA, subscribe to the Black Star, have a telephone and a good
understanding of the Society and Baronial functions. They will be expected
to be the voice of the Crown for our Barony. They will work with all
officers and advise the Crown. Most importantly these people should act
like a B&B with nobility, dignity and grace. They must show people how they
expect to present themselves as the B&B of Raven's Fort.
She next explained the poling process as follows:
* Anonymous nominations can be made by any member of the Populace. Mistress
Clarissa will then write these nominees on a board and present them to the
Populace at large. TRH prefer couples (not necessarily married couples,
just two people). The job of B&B is too difficult for just one person to do
alone. The nominees will be given an opportunity to decline, if they choose.
* There will then be a question and answer time for the nominees to inform
the Populace about where they stand on issues. Each couple will be given
the opportunity to make a 30-second speech and then a 30-minute session of
questions and answers will be allowed. Each member of the Populace is
encouraged to ask pertinent questions of the candidates. One person may ask
one question at a time in order to allow everyone an opportunity.
* Only those people who are actually in the zip codes claimed by the Barony
of Raven's Fort will be allowed to participate in the poling. No one is
required to be an SCA member, but those who are should bring proof of
membership. There will be 2 ballot slips, to differentiate between members
and non-members at the request of TRH. This will allow TRH to see if there
is a great degree of difference in opinion between members and non-members.
* Members of the populace will come into the room, sign in and receive a
slip of paper upon which they will be asked to put their top 2 choices, in
order of preference. These ballots will then be shuffled and counted by
Mistress Clarissa. The members of the Populace and the nominees will not be
informed of the out come of this count; it is only for TRH's benefit.
* Anyone who can not make the night of poling will be allowed to vote via
proxy set up with Mistress Clarissa. Please contact her at
clarissa at supportyou.com. After the night of the ballot those voting by
proxy will have 1 week to send in their vote.
* No mixing and matching of candidates will be allowed. All ballots that do
not vote via the correct nomination process will be disqualified.
* TRHs will interview all the nominees as well.
Mistress Clarissa wished to express the following to the populace:
Our group is small and close knit. We all know each other well and we are
familiar with how everyone will act. There has been speculation for at
least a year about who will be the next B&B; this process should be no
surprise to anyone. TRH need time to choose appropriately and the new B&B
need time to prepare for their investiture. The announcement will probably
be made at Coronation the second week in July.

Business Meeting
* The Montgomery School Demo will proceed as scheduled on Friday, May 18th.
Remember volunteers, this is a school and no live steel will be allowed. It
is not too late for anyone to attend, so please come. The more, the merrier!
* HE Gwynn suggested that all artisans begin working on new scrolls for TRH
immediately so that the Barony can present a lot of them at Coronation.
* A Silent Auction has been scheduled for Defender.
* Nominations for Summer Artisan are needed immediately! Please contact HE
Gwynn to make these nominations.
* HE Gwynn also announced that there is a GIANT amount of tablecloths to be
painted. The first session of painting will be next Thursday at the Keep.
* Announcements to the following effect were made:
* Ldy Clarissima is stepping down from Chronicler in Dec., HL Niklas is
stepping down from Seneschal by Defender and the Heralds Office is open.
Applications for all offices must be in immediately.
* June Quoth submissions need to be in by Friday night at the latest. Email
these to clarissima at excite.com or cnsouthe at hewitt.com.
* Knife, Ax and Spear competitions have been really good. More people from
the area are needed to participate! Lrd Cedric also announced that he needs
a deputy!
* HE Chrystal will no longer tolerate any flaming negative posts on the
list. If this continues, the list will be shut down. Remember this and
treat each other kindly, even on email.

June 2001 Business meeting of the Barony of Ravens Fort

Meeting was held at the Citizen's Bank in New Waverly on 06/21/01
There were 19 members of populace present.
7:15 Call to Order
        A welcome from the Baron and Baroness and the Seneschal was
extended to all present.
Their Excellencies wish to remind the populace that the Barony will be
presenting largess baskets at Coronation for both the stepping-up and the
stepping-down royalty. Contributions are needed, please contact Their
Excellencies for further information.
Event Updates
* Defender 2001 now has a steward, Lrd Arturus. He has made efforts to
contact all of the necessary champions and to coordinate volunteers for the
event. He is still in need of a Head Troll and a Feast Steward. Anyone
wishing to contribute time and effort to the forthcoming event please
contact him.
* The Huntsville Library Demo, headed by Ldy Katrine Karlsdottir, is
scheduled for July 24th at 2-3:30 p.m. There will be spinning, heraldry,
Bardic and story time for the children. The more people there, the better,
so please contact Ldy Katrine to volunteer your time.
* The Porter Demo is scheduled for July 21st at the Wal-Mart in Porter, TX.
Ldy Hrafnhildr and Lrd William are the stewards for this demo and need help
from every member of the Barony. There will be heavy and light fighting,
Bardic, A&S demos and lots of contact with the public. This is a Saturday
demo and a perfect opportunity to reach the public on a large scale. The
Huntsville Item is also tentatively sending a reporter to cover the event,
so the Barony needs to put its best foot forward. Contact Ldy Hrafna or Lrd
William to volunteer your efforts or to donate needed prizes for the
mini-tourney.

Old Business
* Lrd jean-michel de Meaux has received 30 donations for tables and the
effort to create these tables was approved by those present. He will be
ordering the necessary supplies and scheduling a workday very soon. The
work place will be at the Lizard Keep and all are requested to please throw
in their efforts to make these tables ready by Defender.
* The design and budget for the head table was completed by Lrd Cedric and
was approved by those in attendance. The tables are fully documentable and
will be easy to handle and to store. For information on assisting with the
construction of these tables, please contact Lrd Cedric.
* TableCloth painting is proceeding at a wonderful rate, and only a little
is left to be completed. There will be a tablecloth painting meeting at the
Lizard Keep Sunday, June 24, at 4pm to finish the painting.
* July 11th will be the first official meeting of the Cook's Guild at the
Lizard Keep at 7pm.
* Several Work Weekends were planned for the months of July and August to
prepare our site for Defender, and our own Baron & Baroness' investiture.
These dates will be on the next calendar as well as on the baronial
website. They are: July 13th-15th, August 10th-12th (Stargazer's Meeting),
August 17th-19th (Movie Night) and September 7th-9th (Weekend prior to the
event). Much work needs to be accomplished before our site is fit to host
such a large event, please come out and lend your sweat to our efforts.

New Business

* The new Artisan of the Season will be announced at next month's Populace
Social. Her Excellency, Chrystal wishes everyone in the Barony to take an
active effort in making nominations for these awards. It is very important
that people be recognized for their efforts, and everyone is eligible to
make nominations, be they verbal, written or emailed.
* Knife, Ax and Spear Guild will soon have loaner gear so come out to
practice and throw some sharp stuff.
