If we really want people to stay and play with us we need to examine why they would want to stay

and why they would run screaming!

How do we keep newcomers....

1. Introduce them to the hospitilar, this is the person who's whole job discription is to help new people.

2. Introduce them to the B&B at a time that the B&B have time to speak to them....a good time at an event is when they are sitting watching the fighting or other activity....before the final rounds...(not right before court or at the end of an activity where they need their full attention)

3. If possible take them to activities in the group before the event so they might meet people in a setting where they are relaxed....not in the middle of a job when the new people will not get all the attention they should have...

4. Make every attempt to get them into SCA clothes as soon as possible (See number 1)

5. If you bring them, take care of them...act as an unbiased tourguide...tell them positive things and anecdotes about the people and things they see....do not take them to places were you know you are going to have problems...

6. If someone is unpleasant...blow it off...you may have just gotten to someone in the middle of something they're focused on...or just when they are having a bad day...don't dwell on how terrible someone is just because they didn't say the right thing or have the right mood...If you dwell on the negative...you are going to chase them away...DWELL ON THE POSITIVE...give them 10 positive things to counteract any negative interaction they might have had...

7. Get them involved! People will stay if they feel part of the group...and to feel part of the group they need to be involved...

8. Be the example....your demeanor will determine how they interact with others...be polite and considerate of others, be positive, helpful...oh and did I mention considerate...and know the basic rules:Hold = Stop, don't stand close to the list field, don't smoke in public places, pick up your butts, pick up your trash, be respectful in court, ...etc...
