_The Cambridge History of Western Textiles_ 2 Volume Boxed Set

It is an in-depth account of textile production and consumption in the 
Western world over the last 3,000 years.  There is a PDF with the TOC and
first chapter.  Written by every expert I have ever heard of...   Kind of 
pricey, but if you shop around you might find some deals... and then there 
is always ILL.
