[Ravensfort] Old Main/Stephen F Austin Building Fires

DSD,

I'd love to have a copy. That night was brutal. Thankfully everyone was at a Fire Department function so response time for volunteers was most excellent. I remember waiting my turn to go change out of a long dress while we were serving coffee and stuff. Merchants were opening their stores to get needed supplies for the fireman.

The fire lit up the entire area. It was almost like it was daytime. The Stephen F Austin Building has a twin I believe at the Stephen F Austin College? Don't remember the exact location.

  Hey Runa,

I did a historical piece on Old Main a couple of years ago for Sam's 125th year celebration. We reconstructed a 3d model in AutoCad and 3d Studio Max from blueprints, photos, and a few oral accounts. Don Charles has a copy of the DVD and I still have a few. If you like, I will pass one on.

One of the oral accounts passed on the story of having seen the blaze in Madisonville. It seems that the hill where Old Main is located is the highest point between the Gulf of Mexico and just southwest of Dallas.

  Regards,

  dsd

Brain Farts due to old age and thinking I'm chained to a sewing machine.

When Old Main burned it also caught/damaged the Stephen F Austin Building.

I forget how many fire departments were there. The wives of the volunteer

firemen fetched dry socks/gloves etc forever (at least it seemed like it). The

water was freezing on their wet gloves and clothes.

Runa who was there but has brain hiccups from time to time

Everybody knows I'm full of 'em...

This IS Raven's Fort's 20th Anniversary coming up, right? If I'm not mistaken, Baron and Baroness Raven's Fort were invested on 23 September, A.S. XXIV (1989).

In a strange coincidence, the cornerstone of the Old Main building at what was then the Sam Houston Normal Institute was laid on 23 September 1889 :-)

I'll be seeing some of you this weekend. Be careful on the roads out there!
