Ochre with an oil binder goes all the way back to Pliny the Elder. Also Both
Ceninni and Theophilus talk about using red ochre in oil as a base for flesh
tones.

Ochre pigments can be made from just about any kind of dirt or clay. The
most common are red and yellow.
