King's College

On June 17 in the forty sixth year of the society my wife Señora Rosalia
and I journeyed to the Shire of Loch Ruadh to attend the annual King's
College. First stopping in the Barony of the Steppes to visit with our good
friends Pan Konrad Novak and his wonder wife Bantiarna Katerina Ine Curry.
Bantiarna Katerina prepared a delightful dinner, after eating we caught up
with what each other had been happening in our lives. After a long night of
tale tales and remember when stories we laid down for the night.

Getting up the next day before the cock crowed the four of us set out for
the Shire of Loch Ruadh. The good people of Loch Ruadh had prepared a grand
hall with many class rooms full of teachers ready to teach. Señora Rosalia
started off with a how to read Old English taught by our very own Herr
Detlef von Marburg. Where as I started with a basic pick your name heraldry
class taught by Mistress Emma de Fetherstan. This class yielded a lot of
very good information that can be used for people in the barony that would
like to research a name. Señora Rosalia was still in her first class when I
attended a very good class taught by Don Pieter Rausch titled Odd
Punishments in History. Don Pieter's class was not a class of blood and
gore, but of things that were humane but very humiliating to the person that
was being punished. If you have any disciplinary problems around the house
this is the man to see. Señora Rosalia joined me for our next class also
taught by Don Pieter. This class was titled What a way to go Execution
within the SCA Time Periods. Don Pieter taught this class with great care
and grace with the touchy nature of this subject. It was very informative
and made me think about many things that we have in this day and age to help
us in a court room that people in period did not.

Then it was off to court. I have to say this was one of the best courts
that I have ever been in. It was scheduled for 15 minutes, from 12:00 to
12:15. Court started 6 minutes late and Their Majesties changed over two
kingdom level offices passed out several awards announced a new peer and had
us out for lunch at 12:14. Vivat Their Majesties.

For lunch we were rejoined by Pan Konrad and his wife Bantiarna Katerina
were discussed everything learned so far that day. Pan Konrad talked about
his adventures in glass bead making and Bantiarna Katerina told us of her
adventures in lace making.

After lunch we were ready to finish our day. Señora Rosalia went to a two
hour Drop Spindle class taught by H.L. Joanna the Spinner and I went to a
class on beginning painting Using Highlites and Shadow taught by Countess
Deanna della Penna, A very useful class for any person wanting to learn how
to paint on canvas or scrolls. In Señora Rosalia's class not only did she
learn the basics of the drop spindle H.L. Joanna also gifted every student
with their own drop spindle. I had an hour to kill before I had to teach me
class, and I was very nervous. When It was time for me to teach my class
Señora Rosalia stopped by to wish me luck on her way to a class taught by
Lady Ari Manna om Late period Tinctures: Creation, Application, Storage. I
started my class bit early, and my nervous came out from time to time during
the class, but all and all the class went off very well, and with the help
of Mistress Hillary Greenslade and Lord Haraldr Bassi I made it through the
class. I would be remiss if I did not point out that all of the students in
the class were great and asked wonderful questions and provided insight into
period pigments as well as painting with dirt..

Once the day had ended we rejoined Pan Konrad and his wife Bantiarna
Katerina them made our way back to their home in the Steppes. Bantiarna
Katerina cooked a wonderful dinner and we sat and reflected on the day.
Early the next day we arose from our beds we made ready to return to Raven's
Fort. After a fine breakfast we finished packing and left on our way home.
The trip was a pleasant one until we reached the north boundary of Raven's
Fort. The fields and forest had caught fire and we were forced to reroute
our way home. We stopped at the home of Mistress Shanahan The Fey, in good
old Ansteorran hospitality she cooked us a meal and gave us comfort to
everything had settled down and we could finish our travel back to our home
in Raven's Fort.
