Position of The Society For Creative Anachronism Regarding
Charges of Child Endangerment Against Mr. Fremon Seay

Oct. 18, 2011 – For Immediate Release

Several recent news stories indicate that police in the Thurston County (WA)
area are investigating Mr. Fremon Seay and Ms. Julie Seay for abusive
behavior toward their daughter. The alleged abuse involved medieval-style
armor and a wooden baton, similar to the equipment used in the competitive
martial arts activities put on by the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc.
The SCA is a recreational historical re-enactment group with more than
30,000 members worldwide. According to the SCA’s registry office, Mr. Seay
is not a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism; his membership
lapsed in 1995 and has not been renewed since that date. A formal safety
authorization card is required in order to take part in any of the SCA’s
armored competition activities, and renewal of these authorizations is
required on a periodic basis. According to the SCA’s martial-arts safety
officer, Mr. Seay’s safety authorization expired in 2005 and has not been
renewed. Armored competition with wooden baton “swords” is expressly
forbidden outside of official SCA events and activities, as per the SCA’s
governing documents. The SCA does not allow or condone any illegal or
abusive activity, and the group makes every effort to ensure the safety of
all attendees at its events. Minors attending SCA events must be accompanied
by a parent or guardian.
