 I have arrived at a great sea. I know not the name of this sea. The locals
speak no Greek or Alemanian and only a few phrases of Latin. I have spent
several days on a boat traveling down the river. Our peaceful river turns
quite nasty and swift after a day of journeying down stream. I spent a great
deal of time emptying my gullet into the river. I have come to the
conclusion that river men must be immune to the sickness that seems to
strike us when we travel by boat. Today I spent a great deal of time talking
to a dark skinned trader from the east that is quite fluent in Latin. He
told me of a great country that lies many days to the east on the other side
of the spine of the earth. (This is some very large mountain range I
gather.)  He told me of a curiosity that they use in this country to
calculate a variety of things. It consists of a mountain shape that has a
one at its summit and a one on the ends of each line. The middle parts of
the lines are made by adding two adjacent numbers from the line above.

I have no clue what kind of things could be done with this chart, but the
trader showed me how if I had five rocks I could choose none of them in only
one way, I could chose one of them in five different ways, and I could
choose two of them in ten different ways and I could choose three of them in
ten different ways and I could choose four of them in five different ways
and I could choose five of them in only one way.  If you will notice, this
corresponds to the line on the chart that has a five, as it's second number.

I know this bit of trivia will not help you build a mighty siege engine
Gundiock, but the trader told me about a cylinder shaped object that is
built in that far away land. This should be of great interest to you since
it seems to involve the fire part of alchemy. This object contains spirits
of sulfur and other chemicals. When the element fire is applied to the end
of the tube, it flies at a great rate of speed for about 400 paces and when
all of the fire has left the object it bursts into small fragments and makes
a very loud noise. I would love to see one of these things, but I am going
to travel to the west in search of another rumored city that is very vast in
size. Maybe a journey in the future will allow me to travel to this strange
land to the east. I still am searching for something that will allow us to
build large siege weapons.
