I am wondering where we can stack lumber for so long to dry.

All that said, the trunks are very straight and long. ( no comments
thank you Devin )

If nothing else we could protected them until we decide what to do.

Reading this thread with interest.

I have a chainsaw
mill. See pics of us using it here. <A

this you don't haul the logs off. You mill it in place. It's hard
but rewarding work.

Cut the logs into manageable sections. 8 ft
is a good choice.

If they are going to sit long at all get em up off
the ground to avoid wet and insects. rolling them up on some created
4x4's is enough.

Paint the ends of the logs. You do this so they
wont dry too quickly and split. The best thing to paint the end of the
logs with (other than a commercial sealer intended for this job) is some of
the aluminum roof sealant that you can buy at your local home improvement
store.

Mill em as soon as ya can and then stack them in a barn to
dry. They tell ya to figure on one year for each inch of thickness to
air dry.

-EA

David Brown wrote:

I have a friend
> that has a lumber
mill and can cut the tree in to planks if
> we can get it to
his mill.
>
> Brian

Which is
an excellent idea.

I think that we should cut
two 6-foot sections of the trunk and roll them off somewhere to cure
for about a year or so . . . then, get out a chainsaw and other
tools of woody destruction/modification, and make two baronial
thrones . . . now THAT would be COOL . ..

Now, if anyone up
there actually wants to put this into practice, then I would suggest
that you cut it into as many 4.5, 5, or 6-foot sections as you can
get the trunk into, that way you will have as many "backup" sections
of tree trunk as the tree will afford, just in case of snafus will
your "primary" two . . .

Cathal
