"turnip, hardy biennial plant cultivated for its fleshy roots and
tender growing tops. There are two species, belonging to the family
Brassicaceae: *Brassica rapa*, the turnip proper; and *Brassica
napobrassica*, the Swedish turnip, or rutabaga." [Vol 12, p 67.]

"Brassicaceae, also called Cruciferae, the mustard family, of the caper
order (Capparales), a large assemblage of 350 genera.
"The most important genus is *Brassica*, with about 50 Old World
species and including the cabbages, mustards, and rapes. One species, *B.
oleracea*, has many edible varieties, such as tree kale, cabbage, Brussels
sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, and Portuguese cabbage. Other species
include the edible vegetables ... rutabaga (*B. napobrassica*), turnip (*B.
rapa* or *B. campestris*)...." [Vol 2, p 481.]
