In a message dated 97-04-25 22:19:08 EDT, you write:

<< I would wonder about mold
by ship and think if you tried by caravan you'd just end up with the
desicated peels. And yes we're talking about the peels but would
you *pay* to ship grapefruit peels halfway around the world?>>

Actually grapefruit keep rather well at room temperature for rather lengthy
periods of time but I agree that they probably would not have survived the
lengthy shipping process. However, what about seeds? They cretainly grow in
the same climate conditions that oranges and lemons do.

<<For normal use, I think grapefruit peels would work fine. I agree
that modern lime peels are quite difficult to candy because they
are so thin. I believe that period oranges, limes, lemons and such
had much thicker peels so perhaps the grapefruit is not that far
off with that in mind. >>

The peel on "shaddock" which are not hybrid grapefruits actually has a
rather thick skin. But so far we are only conjecturing here. Does any one
know of an actual period account that describes grapefruit as having been
known during SCA period?
