Heavens!  I'd forgotten those!  Some of my older female relatives still
kept them going when I was a child. Yes, it would cook down considerably.
 

My web access is through the public library.  I can print Alia's notes on
Guoter Spise, and have her translation in His Grace's Vol. II, but can't
get her on-line version with the originals to print to my e-mail.



I hope the eternal pot is the answer; I've been thinking of the 'pot
likker' from the yearly corned beef and cabbage.  It's fine once a year,
but I wouldn't care for it as the basis of most of my pottages.  You can
rinse, even soak a little, the salt meat, but if you leach it too long,
you leach the flavor as well.  There may be some of both and lots of
other stuff in there. ;-)
